We are a friendly hockey club based at the Cow Roast, just between Berkhamsted and Tring. We run 5 mens teams and 4 ladies teams, covering all ages and abilities.

For the stars of the future, we have a packed youth section, split into various age ranges, training at various times.

The men play in the Eastern Counties league and the ladies play in the 5 Counties league.

These leagues comprise clubs spread across Hertfordshire and nearby parts of the neighbouring counties.

Both 1st teams continue winning ways after long break

We can all be forgiven for a certain amount of rustiness this first weekend back after six or seven weeks off through the Christmas break and the bad weather. That doesn't seem to include both Men's and Ladies 1st teams who continued where they left off with outstanding wins that keeps them both on track for promotion.

The Ladies 1s won 6-0 against Harpenden. Plenty of goals from the forwards and great defending at the back. Goals came from Anneke Gainer x4, Natasha Goodwyn and Leanne Keatley. Man of the match was a close vote but Leanne (Pictured) just edged it.

Men's 1s won 6-2 against St Albans with goals from Pete Allam x2, Ed Holderness x3 and Jake Alderson. Ed Holderness (pictured) was voted Man of the Match.

Men's 4's fought back from 2-0 down after 10 minutes to draw 3-3. Hertford equalised from a short corner with last play. Goal scorers were Duncan Hodges, Iwan Roberts and Toby Payton. Man of the match was Will Hodges.

The Ladies 4s are one of this seasons great successes. The 2-2 draw against Welwyn takes this team to 11 games unbeaten and 5th place in the league.

Ladies 3's beat Welwyn 3-0 away at Hatfield. Goals from Sophie Lawrance, Jen Silver and Emma Swords! Man of the match was Ophelia Love. Another week and another strange photo from one of the teams. Here the the Ladies 3s modelling what they referred to as the 'Ring of Power'.

The Men's 2s suffered a tough 4-2 defeat against promotion challenging Broxbourne 2s. Berko's goals were scored by Ollie Bowman and Dan Fletcher. Dan was also man of the match.

After such a great finish to 2016, the Men's 3s were hoping to continue their good form. However the first game back after the seasonal break against St Albans was not their best  performance this season. The narrow 2-1 defeat was very error strewn. Definitely room for improvement next week.

Ladies 2's lost 4-0 in a tough first game back against a solid Bishop Stortford. Player of the match was Sarah Filby.

The Men's 5s had some last minutes injury issues. Away at Bedford is not a good time for this to happen. Whilst the result was a 4-0 defeat, the team did put in a real shift against a very strong opposition.

This week we received the sad new that Peter William Wilkinson MC had died 10 days ago. He was 95 years old. Peter had been a member of Berkhamsted Hockey Club in the late 1940's through to the early 1960's. By all accounts he was a very understated man. A quietness that clearly hid his immense bravery. His amazing exploits during World War 2, including being awarded the Military Cross are listed on the following website - click here

Thank you to Graeme Hart who found these two fantastic team photo's - both featuring Peter in the 1st and 2nd teams.

Whilst we have been unable to source much more information about him, we can certainly give thanks that such a remarkable man had been part of our lovely club.

The club have passed our condolences onto his family.

Some serious points claimed this weekend by Anneke Gainer who bagged  4 goals. There is no photographic evidence of a jug – but then again she did not make it back to the club house. However Emma ‘Drogba’ Potts remains top courtesy of a clean sheet and her 5 additional points for umpiring.
Somewhat surprisingly after all the Facebook talk, there were no cards at all in the L1s game. This presumably means that David Wells was not umpiring.
This league is fast becoming a two horse race. Anyone taking bets?

This weeks table will be published on Facebook this week.
