With temperatures feeling considerably more crisp than previous weeks, and despite a few near misses on the commute to Hertford’s home ground, BHHHC ladies 1st XI were in for a proper game of winters hockey against a youthful Hertford 1s.

Being only two points ahead of us in the league, just beating us to second place position, it was likely to be a competitive, fighting match against Hertford 1s.
The game started with high energy and good match pace from all Berko ladies, with some great passes and fantastic runs up the pitch from our forwards and midfielders. Special consideration to Steph and Molly who caused mayhem down the centre of the pitch, despite Hertford’s efforts to stop them. We had many chances on goal, including being awarded a short corner early on in the game, incorporating Dina’s strategies and practices from training. Unfortunately, we were struggling to find the back of the oppositions net, with a few near misses. As a team, we were able to keep possession and maintain the ball within the oppositions half for a lot of the first 35 minutes. Eventually, our persistence paid off, and our first goal came from a hit at the top of the D from Harriette, which just skimmed beneath the goalkeeper’s pads, for Ali to smack into the back of Hertford’s net.
The first half ended 1-0, with Hertford having a few opportunities on goal with their speedy forwards, but they were no match for our solid, composed defence and our hard-working midfield causing mischief both up and down the pitch.
The second half started off as high-tempo as the first, as we worked towards our second goal. This came from a fantastic run from Rosie who broke with pace, after a great pass from Faye who was non-stop running for the entirety of the game. From this, Rosie sped into the D past the oppositions defence; a quick pass to Harriette on the left allowed for a slip around the Hertford goalkeeper to bring the score to 2-0.
Two goals up but that wasn’t enough for a relentless Berko ladies team, as we continued to fight towards victory. Not long after the second, the third goal was achieved after a shot on goal was deflected by Hertford’s goalkeeper, for Harriette to run onto. A slap across the D was picked up by a determined Rosie for her to score the third goal.
Now 3-0 up, we continued to defend our lead, however, following a break from Hertford’s forwards, they were awarded a dubious short corner, from which they managed to score after multiple saves made by our super goalie Vicky.
With not long to go, and the score now at 3-1, Berkhamsted renewed their offensive on the Hertford goal, with some stand out attacking from our rapid right winger Mel, who got the ball into the danger area countless times, unfortunately without further reward.
This was a commanding team performance by the Berkhamsted 1st team ladies, from Vicky in goal; our solid defenders, Debs, Emma and Meg; our tireless midfielders Maria, Helen, Molly, Steph & Faye; and our fast, feisty forwards, Ali, Mel, Rosie and Harriette. The reward for the 3-1 victory for Berko ladies 1s, was second place in the league, leapfrogging Hertford.
MOM went to Rosie for an amazing game up front and her persistent battling!
