Having drawn against Stevenage 3s earlier in the season there was an understandable concern about how we might fare against their 2s. However, this did not last long.
The improvement in the 3s performance over the last month continued and with our improved passing game, we had some good periods of possession playing the game largely in the Stevenage half. The pressure finally paid off and Dubi was there to slot a wonderfully controlled shot into the backboard. We continued in the same vein and in time the passing movement through the midfield found Steedy in the D to lift the ball delightfully over the goalkeepers body.
Into half-time then with 35 minutes of hockey left for the year. We weren’t going to let this slip away and despite Peachey missing a sitter (no doubt due to the very low and difficult angle of the sun at that end of the pitch – so he says anyway – in fact it just looked like a rubbish miss to everyone else), we kept our heads, while Stevenage got more and more frustrated. They came at us hard in a much-improved second half performance from them, but still could not score. Brett pulled off a terrific high save from one of their shorts and it just wasn’t going to be their day. So sad, never mind. The 3s held onto their lead with some fantastic work from the whole team – total commitment was shown to see the match out and to end the first half of the season on a high. 10 points from the last 4 matches! – a wonderful turnaround from the early part of the season that we now have to consolidate and take forward in the New Year.
Happy holidays to all.
