The men's 3's travelled to a balmy Letchworth for a relegation battle of epic proportions. Skipper Ed was motivating and detailed in his pre match changing room briefing and we all knew what we had to do.
The game started and in the opening 10 minutes Berkhamsted had the better of the play and looked most likely to score. Skipper Ed was his usual energetic self, leading from the front. Richard Peachey picked up from his strong performance last week and was popping up all over the midfield. With Sal, Bric and Dom Peachey keeping the defencive line nice and tight it all looked promising.
Play was interrupted for the author when one of my two daughters decided she needed the toilet. When I returned from my fatherly duties the scoreline had changed from 0-0 to 1-1! I am led to believe that the goal from Berkhamsted was scored by a Steve Redman, I cannot verify this as I was otherwise engaged! The game continued with Berkhamsted on the front foot in my opinion and after some sustained pressure our second goal arrived. I was present for this one and a classic it was, Paul Dubenski rolling back the years with his trade mark late arrival at the far post to nudge in a crossed ball. 2-1 to Berkhamsted at half time.
Letchworth were keen to get back into the game in the second half and duly evened the scores at 2-2 from a dubious short corner awarded for what looked like a perfectly good tackle in the D. We didn't let this dampen our spirits and continued to apply pressure to the Letchworth goal. Some nice aerials from David Wells catching the Letchworth defence and on some occasions the Berkhamsted attack out! David Wells was in the thick of the action once again as Jeremy Steed who had a great game played a lovely ball to the far left post where David crashed in the ball and nearly the goally was well. 3-2 to Berkhamsted and the three points were in sight. The crowd were roaring Letchworth on but we were resolute in our defence, the final whistle blew and the points were in the bag.
With four games left there is still the possibility of us staying up so all to play for.
