On the 4th of our 5 visits to North London this season (I suppose it’s better than 5 visits to East Hertfordshire!), we were up against top of the table Southgate Tankards Y.

In the home fixture we had managed a draw with them, so we were not without some hope. On a week of low availability, we were 10 on Friday night, so Jim Carlile & Iwan Roberts kindly offered to help us out.
It was grey & drizzly making the pitch quite slippery, but that was not the only slippery things we would be up against, their centre of midfield consisted of somebody who would not have looked out of place in at least our seconds & a nippy youngster, we could not compete nor keep up with either of these elusive characters and so the pattern of the game was set. They would get the ball, beat a couple of us, then either fire it into the D looking for a deflection or work some one-twos leaving somebody one-on-one with Terry Wintle in goal. Thankfully Terry was on his usual top form & kept the score to a reasonable 3-0 at half time. The half-time team-talk wasn’t downbeat, we would just go out there 2nd half & enjoy the game, trying to play our usual passing game.
We certainly got the ball forward a lot more, though clear-cut chances were few & far between & put some good passing moves together. They scored a further 5 goals, though none from short corners which we defended very well. Damp but not disheartened we all adjourned to the bar, where man-of-the-match votes were spread across 7 players with the final result being a tie between Simon Barron, Ian O’Dell & Terry Wintle.
Sorry that the match report was’t that exciting, but it wasn’t a game to get that excited about for us.
