And so we come to the Men’s 5s last game of the season, a season which has seen us welcome the next tranche of ‘yoof’ to the team, some ‘back to hockey/new to hockey’ Dads join us & most of the more experienced players just about make it through another series of division 9SW fixtures.
We lined up against a youthful Blueharts 7s side, who, from our fixture earlier in the season, we knew would be skilful, with quick passing & good movement, which is quite similar to how we don’t play, so could we outwit them with our more languid style of hockey. It was a resounding no! We were competitive to start with, it was a full 5 minutes before they scored their first goal & they hadn’t even brought on their best player yet! We continued to battle hard, getting the ball to our wide men as often as possible, pressing forward where we could, but not even a short corner was forthcoming in the first half, they scored another couple of good goals & we went in 3 down.
The second half was pretty much a repeat of the first, but we did manage to score a goal! A clearance from defence found Andy P in the middle of the park, he spread the ball wide to Jona who passed it inside to Paul, he drove into the D, from what I could see there was then a bit of a melee, John K & Brian between them somehow found Paul again & he slotted home into the corner of the goal. We also had a short corner, no joy with that once again and several forays into their 23, again without reward. They scored another 4, including a short corner flicked into the top right corner of the goal, a bit unnecessary in 9SW we thought.
Man of the match was split between Terry in goal, without whom the scoreline could have been considerably different, and Lawrence, who continues to progress in leaps & bounds, making the right back slot his own with his calmness under pressure & thoughtful distribution after making some key tackles & interceptions.
