The Men’s 5s move to 2nd in the table with a 3-0 win against a strong Letchworth 6s.
Fisrtly, a bit thank you to Matt Prowse for stepping in between the posts and keeping a fantastic clean sheet, it is much appreciated.
The 5s gave debuts to Cooper Edwards, James Arnold & Ant McCormack, all acquitting themselves admirably against one of the stronger sides in our division, we also had the luxury of 16 players, which meant the ability to take breaks on what was a warmer than expected afternoon.
The first half started brightly, we had good shape and were able to find each other with our passes, a few went astray, but we were all trying very hard. Matt & the defence kept any of the Letchworth attacks out & the couple of short corners were dealt with comfortably. Our play was smooth through the midfield, but we weren’t cutting enough once we got to the final third. We made our changes & the game continued to be a bit end to end without any serious danger of a goal being scored.
So it was 0-0 at half time, but there was nothing but positives in the half time chat, we knew we could go on & win this one.
We came out strongly at the start of the second half, they rarely ventured into our 23 as we pressed a bit higher. Spaces started to appear as they tired and with Nigel & Dave spraying the ball forward more directly to the attackers we knew it wouldn’t be long before our pressure told, Nigel thumped one into the D, Brian got his stick on it to deflect it goal-wards only for a defender to then further deflect it past his own keeper, 1-0, it doesn’t matter how they go in! We continued to dominate, winning the midfield battles, keeping it tight at the back and harrying in attack. Ant found some space to run into in midfield and drove the ball into the D where Brian was perfectly positioned to nick it past the keeper for number 2. We had a couple of short corners, the less said about those the better eh Nigel! As the game was drawing to a close, Andy P received the ball at the top of the D with his back to goal, twisted & turned and pushed the ball to the back post where Brian was there to tap in his & our third.
A very strong team performance, the newcomers bedded in well & will only get better, the youngsters, Deven, Matt, Lawrence & Cooper all had very solid performances & the old boys did exactly what they normally do.
Thanks to Jo Fisher & Pete Karmali for umpiring, sometimes in the face of a little adversity.
Man of the match was close, with hattrick hero, Brian, taking the majority, closely followed by Ant for a very strong debut.
